Ethan Mbappé apologised after being sent off for an elbow as Lille lost 2-3 at home to Betis in the Champions League on Tuesday. The player said in an Instagram Story that he was sorry to his team-mates, staff and supporters and accepted full responsibility for the defeat.
Moments after Lille had conceded a third goal, just before the restart, the 19-year-old struck Natan in the face with his elbow and received a straight red card. He had earlier supplied an assist.
He also acknowledged leaving his team-mates in difficulty in the biggest competition and closed his message with an apology.
Lille led at half-time, then collapsed at the start of the second period, conceding twice in under 10 minutes before the dismissal.
LOSC have never won their Champions League opener, with 3 draws and 6 defeats. It was Mbappé’s first red card and the club’s first straight sending-off in the competition.
