Former Sunderland and Blackpool midfielder Ethan Robson has joined South Shields on loan until the end of the season after being recalled by Carlisle United.
The 29-year-old arrives from Carlisle following a spell at Spennymoor Town, where he made 12 appearances. The Mariners said the agreement runs for the remainder of the campaign and is subject to FA approval.
Robson signed a two-year deal with Carlisle in June 2024 and has made 11 appearances, scoring his first for the club with a free-kick in a 2-0 opening-day win over Woking last August. A hamstring injury sidelined him for about three months.
A Houghton-le-Spring native, he attended St Robert of Newminster Catholic School and joined Sunderland aged eight. He captained youth sides, won Premier League 2 Player of the Month in August 2016, and debuted in September 2017. He left in 2020 after nine league games.
He joined Blackpool in August 2020, helping promotion via the League One play-offs and scoring in the EFL Trophy. A loan to Milton Keynes Dons in 2021-22 led to a permanent move, and he was released in 2024 after their relegation.
Robson also had a loan at Gateshead, scoring shortly after his arrival last spring. His EFL and non-league experience could aid South Shields in the run-in.
