With all the administrative upheaval going on at the club, Borussia Mönchengladbach publicly committed to keeping interim head coach Eugen Polanski in place until the November international break. Initially, few believed that the rookie head coach – hastily promoted from the BMG reserves after Gerardo Seoane’s sacking in mid-September would be able to receive a permanent hold on the position.

Matters have suddenly shifted. Polanski – after seeming a bit raw and flustered at first – has now led the foals to three consecutive victories on-the-trot. Of enormous significance, all three wins have been compelling and convincing. Gladbach blasted past Karlsruhe 3-1 in the Pokal and dismantled FC St. Pauli 0-4 away for their first Bundesliga win last weekend.

Now – courtesy of a 3-1 home win over Köln – Polanski’s team sent their supporters into raptures in the Saturday night Bundesliga Top-Spiel. Gladbach supporters retain bragging rights in one of the fiercest rivalries in all of German football. BMG starter Rocco Reitzwho has already endorsed Polanski’s permanent appointment – explained that the 39-year-old’s system is taking root.

The commitment to the tactical implementation was right,” Reitz told Sky Germany. “There was also the will and, of course, composure in front of goal.

It’s important that we remain compact,” Polanski explained in his own Sky interview.  “It’s important that the boys understand: Why, How, and What for. And that we stick to our principles. We’ve laid a solid foundation.

Polanski himself directly declined to answer any questions about his future, but newly appointed sporting director Rouven Schröder dropped strong hints that his first major task since taking up the post had been rendered easy by Polanski’s performance. It’s common knowledge that Polanski and the club are holding talks.

It’s looking good,” Schröder remarked in the mixed zone. “You’d like us to announce it now, but we have plenty of time to talk over the international break.
