Juventus are keeping a close eye on Giovanni Leoni as part of their plan to bring more Italian talent back into the squad, with the Liverpool defender now one of their main targets for 2027.
The 19-year-old has endured a difficult spell since moving to Anfield, largely because of a serious knee injury, but Juventus clearly still believe there is a big future ahead of him.
For Liverpool, though, the message so far has been pretty simple: they do not want to let him go.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus have identified Leoni as a key part of their plan to rebuild the club’s Italian core.
The Bianconeri had already asked about taking him on loan in recent months, but Liverpool refused to open negotiations. That has not put Juventus off.
Sporting director Marco Ottolini and technical director Ricky Massara are now expected to have Leoni watched on a weekly basis once he returns to action.
Juventus have moved away from other defensive options such as Riccardo Calafiori and Marco Palestra, who are now considered too difficult or expensive to sign.
There is an obvious reason why Liverpool are reluctant to entertain offers.
Leoni is still only 19 and was bought as a long-term investment. His first season was wrecked by an ACL injury, so selling or even loaning him out before seeing what he can do properly would feel premature.
A This Is Anfield report also says Leoni is expected to resume full training soon, with Liverpool keen to assess him themselves before making any decision.
His attitude during rehabilitation has also earned praise. The Athletic journalist Gregg Evans reported that Leoni has “never let his focus slip”, adding that the youngster used his lengthy absence to learn more about Liverpool and improve his English.
From Juventus’ perspective, though, the appeal is easy to understand. They want younger Italian players who can become part of the club’s identity again, and Leoni fits that profile perfectly.
For now, there is no sign Liverpool want to sell. But if Juventus keep scouting him week after week, this feels like a story that could gather pace heading into 2027.
