Eagles and Cherries were playing first games in Europe’s second tier

Crystal Palace and Bournemouth both marked their Europa League debuts with victories on matchday one of the league phase.

The Eagles played host to Lech Poznan on their bow in Europe’s second tier, having conquered the third last term to reach this competition.

Pierre Sage’s side were ruthless in south London, dispatching their Polish opponents 4-0.

Yeremy Pino opened the scoring inside 10 minutes, before Chris Richards doubled the advantage 17 minutes later.

Jorgen Strand Larsen continued his rich forn in lieu of Jean-Philippe Mateta to add the third before the break, and Eddie Nketiah added a final flourish in the final minute of regulation time to cap off a morale-bolstering win.

In San Sebastian, Bournemouth sent shockwaves through the continent as they held on to beat Real Sociedad 2-1 at the Donostia-San Sebastian.

There was less good news, however, for Celtic, who opened their campaign with a 3-1 home defeat by Ferencvaros.

Bamidele Yusuf opened the scoring on 20 minutes for the Hungarians, but Mika Baur levelled with one minute to go until half time for the Scots.

They thought they would be going in level, but Krisoffer Zachariassen’s tap-in in the first minute of stoppage time left Martin O’Neill’s Hoops behind at the break.

It was three just two minutes after the restart, with Daniel Arzani wrapping up the points, converting from Yusuf’s cut-back after a swift breakaway.

On-loan Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade notched his first goal for Juventus in the Old Lady’s 5-0 win over NEC Nijmegen, adding the third in a complete victory for Luciano Spaletti’s side, who top the 36-strong table after the first matchday.

Palace sit second, Bournemouth are 10th, and Sunderland are 16th after their 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar on Wednesday.
