Sunderland are looking ahead to Europe after sealing Europa League qualification with a dramatic final day win, and key dates for 2026-27 have now been set. According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland and Bournemouth enter the league phase directly, guaranteeing eight games, four at home and four away. Brighton must still qualify for the Conference League phase.
The Black Cats finished seventh thanks to a 2-1 victory over Club World Cup champions Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on the final day. It came one year to the day after their late Wembley winner against Sheffield United.
Head coach Le Bris urged humility before the summer draw, saying the schedule will be demanding but the club’s structure leaves them well placed. He added they would not set limits or targets for next season.
Teams will be seeded into four pots by coefficient. Each side will face two opponents from each pot, one home and one away. After eight gameweeks, the top eight go straight to the last 16, the bottom eight go out, and places 16 to 24 enter a two-legged knockout.
The league phase draw is on Friday, 28 August 2026. Matchdays fall on 16 and 17 September, 15 October, 22 October, 5 November, 26 November, 10 December 2026, then 21 January and 28 January 2027.
The final is at the Waldstadion in Frankfurt on 26 May 2027. Sunderland’s players and staff are now taking a well earned summer break.
