Habib Beye is back from the brink. The Frenchman confirmed himself that he was on the verge of the sack at Stade Rennais. His departure was almost officialised before a change of heart. He was given a final chance against Toulouse FC at the end of October. He didn’t quite grab it with both hands, drawing 2-2 against Le TéFéCé, but thereafter, he has got Rennes back on track.
Since then, the club have won six of their last seven games in Ligue 1. In that time, the Breton club have beaten Lille OSC, AS Monaco, Stade Brestois, and RC Strasbourg Alsace. Their only defeat came against Paris Saint-Germain at the start of December.
Speaking ahead of last weekend’s win against LOSC (0-2), Beye has revealed that it will be Europe or bust for him. “If there isn’t a qualification for European competition, it (the collaboration between Beye and Rennes) will end, and that is logical because I accepted that challenge. If we qualify for Europe, there will be another year, and we’ll have time to speak about it then,” he said in a press conference.
The club currently sit sixth in Ligue 1, which would be good enough to qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League, at least. They are also just two points off Olympique de Marseille, who sit in third.
