Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is experiencing a difficult second season in charge at Anfield.

The 47-year-old was brought in from Feyenoord after the 2023/24 season - replacing Jurgen Klopp after the Reds triggered his sizeable release clause.

It couldn’t have gone much better for the Dutchman during his first campaign at the helm - with Liverpool claiming the Premier League title.

Last summer Richard Hughes - the sporting director - backed Arne Slot with £450m worth of signings and it looked like the Anfield side were set for a period of sustained dominance.

Only it’s not worked out like that.

Arne Slot struggling in second season

Despite the acquisitions of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and others Liverpool are floundering in the top flight and struggling to make it into the Champions League places.

Slot continues to be backed by his Fenway Sports Group paymasters but it’s only natural to assume his position will come under review in summer.

The club will have set certain targets for the season - and with Slot only under contract until 2027 we could see his term extinguished one year early if those aren’t achieved.

Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola are among the names linked as potential new Liverpool head coaches - but what about Slot's fate?

If Liverpool opt to pull the trigger the former midfielder has got a European giant seeking his appointment.

Ajax want Arne Slot

Jordi Cruyff is the new Ajax director of football and his first big task is finding a new permanent head coach.

Fred Grim is currently the man in charge during a crisis season for the Eredivisie giants - with the ex-goalkeeper stepping in as an interim option when Slot’s former assistant John Heitinga was dismissed.

Jordi remains a HUGE fan of Slot’s work - according to Mike Vermeij in De Telegraaf - and he could be his first port of call when it comes to appointing a new manager.

"What you hear is that Jordi Cruijff is very taken with Slot," he told the Kick-off podcast.

"You never know what will happen after this season and whether he might even reach out. Peter Bosz isn't interested anymore. Bosz himself said: 'He doesn't have to call.'"

Other names in the frame for the Ajax job include Dick Schreuder - who is doing an excellent job at Eredivisie surprise package NEC - and an as-yet unknown Spanish candidate.

It remains to be seen what Liverpool do with Slot - especially if they miss Champions League football - but he is guaranteed a soft landing at Ajax if he does lose his job.
