Atlético-MG goalkeeper Everson has again challenged the Arrascaeta strike that sent Flamengo through in the 2022 Copa do Brasil last 16, saying the ball did not fully cross the line.
“The assistant behind me gave the goal. It went to VAR and Wilton said, ‘We do not have conclusive images, the on-field decision stands.’ For me, as a goalkeeper, that ball did not go fully over the line,” he told Charla Podcast.
The second leg at the Maracanã on 13 July 2022 finished 2-0 to Flamengo, overturning Atlético’s 2-1 win in Belo Horizonte. The assistant’s on-field call stood after video review could not find a decisive angle.
On 18 July 2022, the CBF refereeing committee released the audio from the checks. In the exchange over the second goal, the VAR said there was no clear image and that the decision on the pitch should be maintained. The recording shows that line was spoken by Pablo Ramon Gonçalves Pinheiro, not referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio.
Arrascaeta’s first goal that night was also reviewed and upheld as a fair contest for space. Flamengo advanced 3-2 on aggregate, later lifting the cup against Corinthians on penalties, with Arrascaeta named player of the tournament.
