Everton have moved swiftly to secure the future of one of their most reliable performers, with James Tarkowski signing a new two-year contract extension that keeps him at Goodison Park until 2028. The defender arrived on a free transfer from Burnley in 2022 and has since made 128 appearances, becoming a cornerstone of David Moyes’ side. Appointed vice-captain in 2023, his leadership has grown alongside his influence.

The 32-year-old is clear about where he wants this project to lead.
“It’s been a crazy few years with some big lows and some massive highs. We’ve managed to get through those tough times and hopefully now we’re on to more positive and exciting times ahead,” said Tarkowski.
Tarkowski has never hidden his ambition to compete beyond domestic competition.
“It’s always been an ambition of mine to play European football. I had a brief spell with Burnley in the qualifiers but we didn’t make it to the group stages, so I want to get there.
“It’s the manager’s goal, it’s our goal as a team and, so far, we’ve started pretty well. Of course, it could have been better but we’ve had a decent start and we’re definitely striving to get into those European spots and bring European football to our new stadium.”
Everton’s unbeaten start at their new stadium has fuelled optimism, with Moyes’ side currently sitting eighth in the Premier League. Tarkowski has started all seven league matches this season, underlining his importance to the system.
Tarkowski offers more than defensive steel. He has scored at least once in every Premier League season across the past seven campaigns. His most recent contribution could not have been more dramatic, climbing highest in the 98th minute to equalise in the final men’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.
Everton’s decision to tie him down until 2028 sends a clear message. In an era when reputations often outweigh reliability, Tarkowski continues to build a case as one of the Premier League’s most durable and effective defenders. If Europe does return to the blue half of Merseyside, it will be built on foundations forged by players like him.
