Everton are planning a major raid on Manchester City to bolster their ranks ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, as per a new report.
The Toffees are in eighth place in the Premier League as they contest for the UEFA Conference League qualifying position in the coming months in the first full season of David Moyes’ return to the managerial hot-seat in Merseyside.
John Stones is expected to leave Manchester City when his contract expires in the summer, having struggled with recurring fitness setbacks once again – with Pep Guardiola’s public statements also hinting that he has lost patience with the 31-year-old.
Jack Grealish is out for the remainder of the campaign after undergoing surgery on a foot stress fracture he suffered in Everton’s 1-0 away win over Aston Villa in January, clouding doubt over his club future as he approaches the end of his loan from Manchester City.
Upon his appointment as Manchester City sporting director last summer, Hugo Viana orchestrated a mass exodus as a series of senior first-team stars were shown the door and new blood was recruited in the form of seven signings.
City also allowed Oscar Bobb and Stefan Ortega Moreno to join Fulham and Nottingham Forest permanently in January, progressing their rebuild as Guardiola’s side remain in the hunt for silverware on four fronts in the second half of the season.
Grealish is unlikely to ever play for Manchester City again, with Everton retaining a £50 million buy option in their loan agreement with the eight-time Premier League champions for the 30-year-old, who is earning around £300,000-per-week at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Everton are covering three-fourths of Grealish’s salary and while the Toffees are still keen to sign the England international permanently this summer, there is a twist in the story as they prepare to spend the rest of the season without the injured forward.
According to the information of Manchester City insider ‘Tolmie’s Hairdoo‘ on X, Everton want to sign Grealish on a permanent basis this summer – but not at the original £50 million option-to-buy price – and are hopeful of a fee around £40 million being negotiated.
In addition, the Toffees are interested in re-signing former defensive prospect John Stones on a free transfer this summer, with Stones expected to be the first of several exits within the first-team squad at the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season.
Stones has not played much since he suffered a leg injury in the days leading to Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Sunderland in December 2025, with Guardiola having to turn to the January market and sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace for £20 million after Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol went off injured in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea on January 4.
Grealish is also expected to leave Manchester City permanently at the end of the season and should it not be Everton, the former Aston Villa captain will not have a dearth of suitors in England or abroad as he navigates the next steps of his club career.
