A historic afternoon for Everton Women, where they stepped on to the hallowed turf at Goodison Park for the first time as permanent occupants, was spoiled by Tottenham Hotspur. Brian Sorensen’s side suffered a 2-0 defeat in front of 6,473 supporters at the Grand Old Lady.
The Blues arrived to this game riding on a high after beating Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield courtesy of an Ornella Vignola hat-trick. However, they looked flat here and goals from Olga Ahtinen and Cathinka Tandberg on either side of the half-time break decided the game in favour of the Lilywhites.
The opening exchanges were cagey with the visitors leading the press. That pressure paid off close to the half-hour mark when Ahtinen nipped the ball away from Rion Ishikawa, played a one-two with Tandberg before slotting it home.
The hosts’ situation went from bad to worse just four minutes into the second half when Tandberg caught Everton goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan off her line and lobbed the ball from 40 yards out to stun the home crowd into silence.
While the Blues’ second-half performance was better than the first 45, they failed to carve out meaningful openings and ended the game without a shot on target.
Despite the promising start last weekend, Sorensen and his players have a lot to do. They also looked tepid in the opening 30 minutes against Liverpool and were outplayed by Spurs in every department here.
The Blues will return to Goodison Park with a match scheduled against London City Lionesses on September 19.

Jack @2.
I think that's one of a number of reasons why I can't take women's football seriously.

Thanks for the summary Anjishnu. Disappointing result but another great opportunity for Andy to tell us why he doesn't like Women's football.

Also, am wondering whether the crowd attendance was lower than expected. Obviously better than the attendances at the previous stadium. Not sure if you can just rock up at Goodison Park so weather might have something to do with it.

So Andy can't take women's football seriously because women menstruate? Textbook misogyny, worthy of the Taliban. I actually envy the women's team, and its supporters, because they can still enjoy being at Goodison Park, instead of the miserable, characterless bowl where the men's team now play.

The thing that worried me about the Everton team was they lacked the physical hight and presence of the Spurs team. They were easily muscled off the ball although individually a number of them had good skills. At the starting line up the Everton team looked liked small girls compared to the height an size of the Spurs women. The other problem we had was the rain and cold - Winter is Coming.

Well, good to see the usual well-informed comments on a thread about women's football. Just to add my two-pennyworth, I also can't believe Andy's comments - it is the 21st century and women make up half the population. Women's sport of all kinds deserves respect. There will be differences, but the women's game is definitely on the up, whereas I genuinely fear for the men's game at the moment due in no small measure to the corruption and greed of governing bodies and the global elite clubs. I really hope women's football manages to avoid that in future, as it inevitably grows.
John - whilst I am very pleased Goodison has been spared the bulldozers, I can't agree with you about the BMD. It is already magnificent and the atmosphere will only improve as the fan base gets used to it.
In respect of the result - very disappointing following the great win at Anfield, but there are a lot of new players to integrate. I am sure, under TFG the future for Everton Women is very bright.

Asked same question to son who went to the game.
A: Don't know. By the time I got to the front of the queue they were sold out - exactly as they were at the Roma game.
Need to have more doughnuts in stock.
Peter - 21st century and women make up roughly 50% of the population. Wow, only now? Have they not always been around 50% of the population?

Rob. Perhaps they were slightly stale leftovers from Saturday?

6473 quite a good turn out. Remember a different company runs the Womens team now ! Though unsure if they own the catering rights too. Might explain difference in prices.

Sorensen out

Phil - the two facts are not connected, they are both relevant to this debate in their own right. In a modern, western, capitalist society women are not just 50% of the population, they are increasingly seen as having equal disposable income. Indeed, women are now outperforming men in terms of qualifications and in terms of income amongst the younger generations. In this sense they are the future and TFG I am sure are well aware of this in terms in future revenue streams.

this donut discrepancy is clear evidence of unconscious bias. Were there any other sugary confections sold at both stadia? A similar case brought Birmingham Council to its knees.
