Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson hailed his side’s “massive all-round performance” as the Reds secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Real Madrid at Anfield on Tuesday night. The result not only strengthened Liverpool’s Champions League campaign but also marked back-to-back clean sheets following their 2-0 win against Aston Villa.
Liverpool’s season has been defined by periods of inconsistency, but Robertson believes the squad is rediscovering its rhythm. “Really pleasing,” he said after the final whistle. “Glad we built on Saturday, trying to bring that consistency back. From minute one we were bang at it, hard to beat, and working hard for each other. The quality was there too.”
The decisive moment came on the hour mark when Alexis Mac Allister rose to meet a well-delivered cross, heading home the winner past Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian goalkeeper had already made several outstanding saves to keep Madrid in the game, frustrating Liverpool’s forwards until the breakthrough.
Robertson praised Courtois but emphasised Liverpool’s perseverance. “You just have to keep going. He’s an unbelievable keeper and always seems to bring out his best against us. But we kept knocking at the door and believed that if we kept creating, we’d break through eventually. Thankfully, Macca popped up with the goal.”

The 30-year-old Scot also highlighted Liverpool’s defensive focus, with two consecutive clean sheets providing a foundation for renewed belief. “That’s where results start,” Robertson explained. “Too many times this season we’ve had to score three goals to win games. That’s not sustainable. Winning 1-0 or 2-0 shows control, and I think we’ve brought that back.”
Liverpool’s defensive improvements have been crucial as Arne Slot looks to establish stability across all competitions. The side’s compact shape and collective work rate were evident against Madrid, with every player contributing to limit the Spanish side’s chances. “Everyone worked their socks off,” Robertson added. “Even the lads coming off the bench played their part. It was a massive all-round performance.”
Attention now turns to the Premier League, where Liverpool face Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday. Robertson acknowledged the physical and mental demands of the week but believes Liverpool travel with renewed confidence. “We’ve put a lot into this week already,” he said. “It’s going to be tough, but we go there with more belief than we had last week. That’s pleasing.”
Liverpool’s recent results have restored optimism around Anfield, with supporters encouraged by the side’s blend of discipline and attacking purpose. For Robertson, it’s about sustaining that balance. “Consistency was the message before the game,” he noted. “We’ve shown we can do it — now we have to keep it going.”
Beyond his defensive reliability, Robertson’s leadership continues to shine. He remains a central figure in Slot’s system, both for his tactical awareness and his relentless energy on the left flank. So far this season, he has made 11 appearances and completed 493 passes, contributing one goal.
As Liverpool chase silverware across multiple fronts, Robertson’s experience will be vital. His words echo the growing belief that the Reds are regaining their edge — one grounded in discipline, teamwork, and a hunger to reclaim their place among Europe’s elite.
