Pep Guardiola issued a damning assessment of Manchester City’s current status across competitions after their latest defeat, this time at the hands of Bodo/Glimt.
The result in Norway has only compounded the difficult narrative forming around City following the disappointment of the Manchester derby and a growing sense that momentum has slipped away at a crucial stage of the campaign.
What once appeared to be a season of promise has quickly turned into one of inconsistency and frustration, with senior players such as Erling Haaland having already taken public responsibility for the latest issue on the road in Northern Norway.
The defeat in the Arctic Circle itself was a reflection of wider issues as City found themselves two goals behind inside the opening half-hour after defensive lapses of concentration and quality were ruthlessly punished.
Although Gianluigi Donnarumma prevented further damage, City were left chasing the game after a stunning strike early in the second half stretched the deficit further, and while Rayan Cherki briefly offered hope, Rodri’s sending-off ended any realistic chance of recovery.
Speaking to reporters from the Aspmyra Stadion in Bodo on Tuesday night, Pep Guardiola issued a brutal assessment of Manchester City’s current scenario across competitions at present.
“We have the feeling that everything is going wrong in many details and we have to try and change it but the players are there,” Guardiola admitted.
The 55-year-old explained, with context from their latest disappointing result, “It’s a little bit soft the second one [yellow card to Rodri], but it is what it is.
“In the moment, 3-1, and after one minute [you get a red card], everything is a little bit against [us], for many many things, especially when we started New Year’s in Sunderland when we missed what we missed and after we had injuries and injuries and Matheus [Nunes] with flu cannot be here.
“So there are many many things are against [us] and in that level, the Champions League and against [Manchester] United, the top level, always it is a little more difficult to have the consistency that we had for one or two months.”
Attention now turns back to the Premier League and a home clash with Wolves before the final Champions League league phase match against Galatasaray next week, which has now become a must-win encounter if Manchester City are to secure a top-eight finish.
For supporters, this moment represents a defining crossroads as Erling Haaland’s apology and Pep Guardiola’s candid assessment point to a dressing room fully aware of the gravity of the situation.
How Manchester City respond in the coming fixtures could shape the trajectory of their entire season, while a strong reaction would restore belief and authority. However, another setback would reinforce the sense that, as Guardiola himself admits, everything truly is going wrong.
