Fabio Capello has urged Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi to ‘wake up’ his squad following a 4-4 draw against Juventus.

In his latest interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, as reported by FCInterNews, Capello dropped a comment on Inter’s sluggish start to their Scudetto-defending season.

Leaking goals at an alarming rate has become a recurring theme for Inter this season.

It’s up to Simone Inzaghi to find a cure for his side’s lackluster defensive attitude before it’s too late.

Last season, Inter brimmed with confidence.

Indeed, they only conceded a league-low 22 goals en route to their 20th Serie A title.

However, their defensive resilience has somewhat vanished in the early proceedings this term.

Inter’s flaws at the back came to the fore on Sunday.

For the first time in a while, Inzaghi’s charges conceded four times in a single match.

Therefore, Capello has called for the Nerazzurri boss to come up with a solution sooner rather than later.

Fabio Capello Urges Inter Milan Boss Simone Inzaghi to Re-Establish Defensive Solidity

“The Nerazzurri, once solid in defense, have become more carefree,” Capello stated.

“The feeling is that the players are focusing more on the ball than on their marking, which deviates from the good habits of the past.

“The absence of a leader like Acerbi likely plays a role in this.

“Simone needs to give his players a bit of a refresher and quickly restore the right mindset to regain the solidity that led them to the Scudetto.”

Furthermore, Hakan Calhanoglu’s absence has been greatly felt.

“There is no clone of Calhanoglu; his absence is significant,” Capello added.

“The Turkish player is not only one of the best playmakers in Europe but also a valuable ball recoverer.

“There’s an Inter with Calhanoglu and one without.

“However, the Nerazzurri have the strongest and most complete squad in the league in terms of quality and variety of options.

“It’s no coincidence that on Sunday they could have also won 7-4 if we count the missed opportunities in front of Di Gregorio.”

Fabio Capello Tells Inter Milan Manager Simone Inzaghi Not to Underestimate Empoli

“Inzaghi, while waiting for Calhanoglu, needs to recalibrate the team on the channels of the 2023-24 season,” he continued.

“Today, he starts again against Empoli, which won’t be a walk in the park.

“Roberto D’Aversa’s team held Juventus to a 0-0 draw and made Napoli struggle, winning only from a penalty.

“Empoli doesn’t shy away from playing. Inter might find spaces to counterattack and inflict damage.

“But they must enter the field with the attention and hunger of their best times.

“If you underestimate the Tuscans, you’ll pay for it.

“And now, after the comeback suffered in the derby d’Italia, Inter cannot take that risk,” Capello finished.
