Davide Frattesi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be key players in facilitating Inter Milan’s switch to a 3-4-2-1 shape under Cristian Chivu.

Reportedly, coach Cristian Chivu wants to change the formation at Inter Milan.

The Nerazzurri have been playing with a 3-5-2 shape for the last six seasons. That is the formation that both Antonio Conte and Simone Inzaghi exclusively used.

However, Chivu wants to freshen things up with some new tactical ideas.

The Club World Cup provided a preview of the Romanian’s new formation.

Chivu wants an extra player staying up and supporting the attack. Therefore, he is keen to use a 3-4-2-1 system.

In the view of the Corriere dello Sport, two midfielders could have important roles in Inter moving to a 3-4-2-1 formation.

Firstly, there is veteran Henrikh Mkhitaryan. He has been a starter for Inter for three seasons now, but in a midfield trio.

For much of his career, however, Mkhitaryan has played as a winger or attacking midfielder.

Therefore, the Armenian certainly knows how to provide the final pass. This will make him an important player in adding some creativity to the Inter frontline.

Then, midfielder Davide Frattesi has always been prolific in terms of goals. He is a player who knows how to attack the penalty area.

Therefore, the 3-4-2-1 shape could be the perfect showcase for Frattesi’s best qualities.
