Former England and Hull City manager Peter Taylor has urged Hull to sign Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United, calling the move an obvious decision as the striker prepares to leave Elland Road.

Hull are pursuing the 24-year-old amid strong interest from Birmingham City and Wrexham, with Birmingham currently ahead of the Welsh club.

Manager Sergej Jakirovic wants him back at the MKM Stadium on a permanent deal, and Gelhardt is keen to return after 60 appearances across two loan spells. If Hull reach an agreement with Leeds, the transfer could be concluded quickly, with the forward eager to make East Yorkshire his long-term home.

"I think if the manager wants him, then I think the owner should back him one hundred per cent because you know the manager's done an outstanding job," he told the 1904 Club podcast.

Leeds’ valuation is believed to be about £4m and the striker has 12 months left on his contract. Taylor has urged Hull to meet the price.

"If he's 24 and costs £5m, there's a fair chance, even if he wasn't a great success, he'd probably go and get £3m for him anyway, so it's a no-brainer."
