The 62-year-old was sacked 11 months into his second spell with Rotherham United back in March after a 4-0 defeat at home against Crawley Town, leaving the Millers 16th in the League One table.

This spell marked Evans’ second period in charge of Rotherham, after having previously managed the Yorkshire outfit from 2012 to 2015.

Consecutive promotions from League Two up to the Championship followed, which led to great excitement among the club’s fanbase when his return was announced.

However, his second stint as the Millers’ boss was far less memorable.

Following his departure from the New York Stadium, Evans has opted against a return to management in favour of a fitness-related pursuit.

Evans has been a stalwart EFL manager over the past 20 years, leading sides such as Crawley Town, Rotherham United and Stevenage to great success in that time.

The longest break he previously had between jobs in the last 15 years was just six months, and the 62-year-old has now matched that following his Millers dismissal.

That hasn’t been down to a lack of interest in his services, however. Instead, Evans used the opportunity to make a major change to his lifestyle.

In an interview with Sky Sports, the former Leeds United boss has opened up on his new fitness regime which he used to lose such a large amount of weight.

Swimming 2.5km each morning, as well as regularly going cycling, has all been part of his health kick, which Evans revealed was down to family reasons. This has resulted in him losing a whopping 41.2kg of weight.

He did admit that a few teams have shown interest in his managerial services, but he ultimately made the decision to prioritise his health.

Evans stated that he sought help from fitness specialists and a cardiologist before making a training plan that he has stuck to religiously.

When speaking to Sky Sports, Evans revealed that he is feeling the benefits of his weight loss both physically and mentally.

As modern football has progressed, new tactics and ideologies have turned the sport into a totally different game, which means that managers from previous generations have had to learn to adapt.

After taking a small break from coaching, Evans may use his new mindset to slightly tweak his approach to management and arrive at his next club with fresh ideas.

After admitting that he was in a much better place mentally and physically, the 62-year-old may just enjoy further benefits when he next assumes his role in the dugout.
