Inter Milan signed defender Manuel Akanji from Manchester City on deadline day.

The Nerazzurri also loaned defender Benjamin Pavard to Marseille in the final hours of the transfer window. Therefore, Akanji was the player they identified as a replacement for the Frenchman.

Akanji certainly arrives with the same kind of pedigree as Pavard.

The Swiss international has spent the last three years with Manchester City. He has won the Premier League title twice, and also helped the Cityzens to the Treble in his first season at the club.

Furthermore, Akanji had previously played in the Champions League for the likes of Basel and Borussia Dortmund.

Akanji praised the club that he’s just joined. “Inter are one of the strongest clubs in Europe,” he said.

“They compete for every title every season,” the 30-year-old continued.

“The league. The Coppa Italia. The Champions League, a competition where they’ve reached the final twice in the last three seasons.”

Meanwhile, Akanji also spoke about linking up with former Swiss national teammate Yann Sommer at Inter. “I know him really well,” the defender said of Inter’s goalkeeper.

“I know him really well. We played together for the national team for many years.”

Akanji stated that he feels “comfortable” with Sommer. “Both because of his goalkeeping ability, and his playmaking abilities.”

“We have a great connection,” the defender said. “So I’m happy to be reunited with him.”
