Anthony Martial has been offered a contract that would make him the highest-paid player in the history of AEK Athens.

Martial is assessing his options after leaving Manchester United at the end of last season, with the Frenchman’s underwhelming nine-year spell with the Red Devils brought to an end.

There has been interest in the 28-year-old from a number of leagues, including MLS and Ligue 1.

However, the Greek Super League has emerged as a surprise suitor for Martial with AEK Athens in talks over a potential deal. According to Sport24, the capital club are prepared to make the forward the best-paid player in their history to tempt Martial to the division.

AEK Athens finished second in the Greek Super League last season and want to sign a forward to boost their title challenge.

Matías Almeyda’s squad currently contains a host of ex-Premier League names, including former Tottenham winger Erik Lamela and ex-Watford duo Roberto Pereyra and Nordin Amrabat. AEK are also in talks with Chelsea over a deal to sign fellow forward David Datro Fofana.

Lille rule themselves out of Anthony Martial race

The Greek side have received a boost in their bid to sign Martial after French side Lille ruled themselves out of the running.

“Contacts with Martial? No,” Lille president Olivier Letang told DAZN.

“Absolutely none. I’m not in the habit of stockpiling players. We have Jonathan David, Mohamed Bayo, and Matias Fernandez-Pardo. That’s already three solutions for one position.”

Martial made 317 appearances for Manchester United after signing from AS Monaco in 2015 and scored 90 goals for the club in all competitions.
