Ex-Sunderland striker Ross Stewart joins Swansea on three-year deal | OneFootball

Former Sunderland striker Ross Stewart has joined Swansea City on a three-year deal after a spell as a free agent, the club unveiling the 30-year-old on Thursday.

The Scotland international left Southampton in June after failing to agree a contract extension at St Mary's. Head coach Vitor Matos said Stewart is an experienced and proven Championship performer who brings hunger, leadership and a strong scoring record, and he looked forward to settling him into the group.

Southampton were embroiled in a spying scandal last season that ended with their expulsion from the Championship play-off final, denying Stewart and his team-mates a shot at promotion to the Premier League. Earlier this summer he travelled to the World Cup as part of Scotland’s squad.

Stewart was a crowd favourite at Sunderland between 2021 and 2023, scoring 40 goals in 80 appearances. He netted a crucial goal at Wembley in the 2022 League One play-off final.

He joined Southampton for a fee of around £10 million, but injuries hampered his time on the south coast and he made only 50 appearances across three seasons. He scored 12 goals for the Saints, 11 of them coming in 33 outings last term.
