“Exactly the right place”: Kompany’s scout predicts a long era at Bayern

Vincent Kompany and FC Bayern—it seems like a perfect fit by now. Yet, as is well known, the Belgian wasn’t Munich’s first choice in the summer of 2024. However, those initial doubts have long since vanished.

Kompany has helped the German record champions continue to develop on the field while also building a close bond with his team. Bayern’s management has already recognized this progress by offering him an early contract extension through 2029.

If Albert Martens has his way, Kompany could even stay in Munich for much longer. His former youth coach at RSC Anderlecht is convinced that the Bayern coach isn’t the type to move on at the next lucrative opportunity.

“I was always certain about Vincent”

In Bayern’s member magazine, issue 51, Martens raved about his former protégé and his skills as a coach.

“With Vincent, I was always certain he’d become a top coach. He’s intelligent, honest, a good people manager, and a winner. And he’ll never say, ‘I’m the best.’ Even if he wins the Champions League, he’ll say, ‘It’s great that we did it—and tomorrow we move on,’” Martens explained.

These are qualities that also set Kompany apart at FC Bayern. The Belgian is considered ambitious and demanding, yet he has also built a close relationship with his players.

His work is also bearing fruit on the field. After a few rough patches in his first season, the team has continued to develop under Kompany. Consequently, the club’s leadership has great confidence in the 40-year-old.

“I don’t think he’ll be going anywhere else anytime soon.”

Martens can therefore easily imagine Kompany staying at Säbener Straße for the long term. “He’s exactly where he belongs at Bayern. There, he has the chance to develop and win titles. He knows that.”

In his view, even a significantly more lucrative offer from another club wouldn’t automatically prompt Kompany to make a move.

“I don’t think he’ll be going anywhere else anytime soon. Vincent isn’t the type to switch clubs just because he can earn twice as much somewhere else. He’s loyal. Just like me. I was at Anderlecht for 32 years. And Vincent is very much an Anderlecht man.”

For FC Bayern, these are promising statements. After numerous coaching changes in recent years, the Munich club is once again longing for continuity on the bench.

With his contract running through 2029, both sides have already laid the groundwork for that. If Kompany continues to develop the team and win more titles, this successful partnership could indeed turn into a long-term era.
