The Owls confirmed on Tuesday that the German has departed the club with just under two weeks to go before the new Championship campaign gets underway.

The 36-year-old took on the role in October 2023, and oversaw 20th and 12th place finishes in the second division, earning plenty of plaudits along the way.

But issues behind the scenes have led to him parting ways with the Yorkshire outfit, leaving the first managerial role of his career after 89 games in charge.

Goodman is unsurprised by Rohl’s exit from Sheffield Wednesday, claiming it was always going to be difficult for him to stay after a falling out with senior players.

However, he feels that a departure could be the right path forward for the coach given the worsening situation at the club at the moment.

“I think things for Sheffield Wednesday just seem to be going from bad to worse, really,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.

“The off-field problems are just stacking up, and every passing week Sheffield Wednesday appear to be in a weaker position than they were the previous week.

“Danny Rohl leaving; it’s not a massive surprise, I’ve got to be honest.

“I do feel that there was a group of senior players that weren’t impressed with his desire to leave in the face of adversity towards the end of last season and through the summer, where he didn’t turn up for the first two weeks of pre-season.

“I don’t think that did Danny Rohl any favours but, maybe from his perspective, maybe he’s better off out of it because the club’s a real mess at the moment.”

Sheffield Wednesday will begin their Championship campaign on 10 August with a clash against Leicester City.

Rohl will surely land on his feet after Sheffield Wednesday exit

There was a lot of speculation surrounding Rohl earlier in the summer, with potential positions popping up across English football, as well as further abroad.

It would not be surprising if the German picked up his next manager’s position in the next few months, as he’s likely to be a man in-demand given his exploits with the Owls.

The 36-year-old did a great job with Sheffield Wednesday, especially in keeping them in the Championship in his first season in charge, before turning them into a side that were genuine play-off contenders for a considerable amount of the 24/25 season.

The difficulty will now be for the Owls to maintain the kind of form they had under Rohl despite losing several first-team players this summer as well.
