It has been reported by The Times that the Boro manager is now the number one target for the Premier League side following a breakdown in talks with Gary O’Neil.

The 42-year-old spent four years with the Midlands outfit as a player, making over 100 appearances for the club in that time.

Edwards only took charge at the Riverside in the summer, replacing Michael Carrick as manager, but he has previously worked at Luton Town and Watford.

He guided the Hatters to promotion to the Premier League, but the side suffered relegation after just one year and he was later dismissed following a difficult start to life back in the Championship at Kenilworth Road.

Goodman believes that Edwards’ best chance of managing in the Premier League next season might be to stay at Middlesbrough for the time being.

However, he is sure that the Boro manager will have a very difficult decision to make if he is offered the Wolves job due to his connection to the team.

“I guess really were Rob Edwards to be offered the job at Wolves, then he’d have a really difficult, very emotional conundrum,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.

“Obviously, Wolves are a club that he loves, they’re very close to home for him.

“But the conundrum is there’s possibly, at this stage of the season, more chance of him being a Premier League manager next season with Middlesbrough than there would be with Wolves.

“It would make sense for Wolves in terms of it looks like they’re going to be a Championship club, they want somebody with Championship pedigree and he fits that bill.

“But, from his perspective, I think at this stage in the project that he’s undergoing at Middlesbrough, it would be very, very difficult for him to leave."

Middlesbrough are currently second in the Championship table, and are in the mix for automatic promotion to the Premier League.

The Teesside outfit haven’t competed in the top flight since 2017, but 25 points from their first 13 games has left them in a strong position in the standings.

The gap to leaders Coventry City is just three points, while Stoke City are only one point behind Boro in third.

Next up for Edwards’ side is a trip to face promotion rivals Leicester City this evening in a 7.45pm kick-off.

Wolves job could be a poisoned chalice for Rob Edwards

The chance to work in the Premier League will be tempting, regardless of his history with Wolves as a player.

But the job at Molineux could be a poisoned chalice at this stage, as their position in the table is quite precarious and relegation could be on the cards.

It’s still early in the season and a good run of form could change things very quickly, but it’s a squad that also needs a lot of work and lacks a massive star talent since the departure of Matheus Cunha in the summer.

Given he is just in the door at Middlesbrough, it might benefit Edwards in the long run if he sticks rather than twists at this stage.
