Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie has backed Frank Lampard as a future England manager following his impressive work with Coventry City.

Recently, former Premier League midfielder Jamie O’Hara tipped the former midfielder to be a future manager of his national team due to what he’s doing with the Sky Blues, and Hendrie has similarly followed suit.

Thomas Tuchel is currently in charge of England, and will oversee their bid to win a second FIFA World Cup next year in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

But the 47-year-old could be in line to take over from the German whenever he does leave the position, which could be as soon as next year when his contract expires at the end of the World Cup period.

Lampard previously managed at Chelsea, Everton and Derby County prior to his move to Coventry, and has earned plaudits for how the Sky Blues are playing in the Championship - especially in the early stages of 2025-26, where they have a mammoth plus-20 goal difference and sit atop the table.

Former Aston Villa man Hendrie believes that Lampard has the mentality and temperament to oversee a job like the England national team.

The Sky Sports pundit has claimed that the former England international will be linked as an option to lead the national side at some point in his career, as long as he can keep up this level of progression at Coventry.

“I think Frank will definitely be linked with the England job at some stage if he continues his progression,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.

“Obviously, he’s have had a few jobs where he’s gone in, (and it) hasn’t quite worked.

“I feel like he’s found his feet a little bit more since taking on Coventry, and that’s brilliant to see.

“He will be touted with England for sure because I think he’s got the right temperament and mentality to do so.

“So, I totally agree with that.”

Coventry have enjoyed strong form under Lampard since he arrived as Mark Robins’ replacement in November of last year.

The Sky Blues currently lead the Championship table going into the October international break, having earned 19 points from a possible 27.

The club narrowly missed out on promotion last season as well, losing in stoppage time of extra time in their play-off semi-final clash against Sunderland, who went on to win the final at Wembley, but Cov will be hoping to avoid the post-season lottery and go up automatically.

If Tuchel does depart the role as England manager in the summer, regardless of World Cup result, then Lampard will surely be one of the names in contention for the job - even if Coventry make it to the Premier League.

Many people will have a preference for an England coach, and the likes of Eddie Howe and Graham Potter could also be in the mix, despite the latter performing poorly for West Ham.

But Lampard also knows the pressure of playing for the national team, which will give him a unique perspective on the managerial position.

It will be interesting to see whether he’d want to stick with Coventry, if they’re promoted, or if he’d take on the England job after the World Cup, if he is offered the chance to replace Tuchel in 2026, but it would be hard to turn down his country, should the opportunity arise.
