Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero believes two youngsters in Pep Guardiola’s squad could be set for a breakthrough campaign at the Etihad Stadium.
The former striker, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the club’s history, continues to keep a close eye on developments in Manchester despite retiring from the game back in 2021.
Known for his sharp eye for attacking talent, Sergio Aguero’s opinions carry significant weight among Manchester City supporters, particularly when it comes to identifying the next wave of stars capable of stepping up under Pep Guardiola.
For City, the pathway from academy to first-team football has become increasingly important. The rise of Phil Foden stands as the benchmark, while names such as Rico Lewis have also proven the club’s youth system is capable of producing players who can compete at the very highest level.
Aguero’s latest comments will therefore be viewed with optimism by fans eager to see which talents could follow in those footsteps, and the now-ongoing season also represents a crucial stage for a number of City’s young prospects.
After a campaign defined by injuries and transition in 2024/25, Guardiola is expected to lean more on academy graduates, particularly in domestic competitions and during a congested fixture schedule. That dynamic makes Aguero’s latest remarks all the more intriguing, hinting at which players could be on the verge of greater responsibility.
Speaking exclusively to City Xtra on behalf of Stake.com, Sergio Aguero name-dropped two young talents in Pep Guardiola’s current Manchester City squad for breakthrough campaigns at the club this season.
“There’s a good bunch of players that have been looking to get more play time and have risen up to the occasion when that’s happened. Nico O’Reilly is one,” Aguero admitted.
The Argentine legend continued, “Oscar Bobb should be back by now from the injury that put an end to a great last season.
“He has been showing a lot of promise and I think Oscar could have an important contribution to the team.”
Sergio Aguero’s belief in both Nico O’Reilly and Oscar Bobb aligns with the club’s wider outlook. The former has already made his mark on Pep Guardiola’s squad with intelligent performances at left-back during the last campaign, while Bobb’s technical ability and energy has made him a standout during the opening weeks of the new season.
With both now pushing for more consistent minutes, Manchester City’s options in attack and midfield look set to be bolstered by their involvement. The coming months could therefore be decisive with competitions on multiple fronts, and Guardiola needing to rotate more than ever, with the opportunity for youngsters to establish themselves clear.
If O’Reilly continues his development and Bobb returns to his pre-injury form, Aguero’s prediction of a breakthrough season may well come true. For City supporters, the thought of another generation of homegrown talent contributing at the Etihad is an exciting prospect.
