Birmingham City have suffered a poor run of form recently in front of goal
Birmingham City have failed to live up to expectations during the early stages of the 2025/26 campaign.
After enjoying a record-breaking, title-winning League One season, Blues entered the transfer market in ambitious style to try and give themselves the best chance of fighting towards the top of the Championship.
Chris Davies and Co. wasted no time in recruiting talented operators such as Tommy Doyle, Kyogo Furuhashi and Demarai Gray, which set expectations sky-high heading into the season.
Owner Tom Wagner has set about bringing Birmingham City’s status up to that of a Premier League regular, with his vision for the club embodied in the ‘Sports Quarter’ project - a brand-new development in the east of the city which will encompass a new 60,000-seater stadium, training ground and academy facility, plus entertainment, office, residential and retail spaces.
On the pitch, however, Blues have struggled to live up to the bill so far, languishing 11th in the Championship table after five matches, following three straight defeats in all competitions.
Despite signing attackers such as Kyogo, Gray and Patrick Roberts, the Second City side have struggled to break teams down and have ultimately paid the price after 90 minutes.
Birmingham City are currently bottom of the league for shots on target per match with just 1.8, highlighting the fact that their creative players are struggling to forge opportunities for others to dispatch.
In light of this alarming statistic, Sky Sports pundit and former EFL striker Don Goodman exclusively revealed to Football League World what he thought of Blues’ forward line so far this season.
“The creativity element to Birmingham City is the bit that worries me the most,” stated Goodman. “I think defensively, they have been exceptional.
“They've only faced nine shots on target, so they really do restrict teams. But then you flip it over and the attacking numbers don't make for pleasant reading in reality. It's a little bit of a surprise when you consider the investments that they've made.
“But they haven't been creative enough in that final third and that's led to them not getting too many shots on target.
“So, it is slightly concerning and I'm sure that's an area that Chris Davies and the players are working on really intensely. That is an area that they will need to improve if they're going to be in the mix at the top end of the table.”
Despite enjoying a wealth of talented operators, Davies and Co. have struggled to get them to combine effectively on the pitch so far this season.
Birmingham haven’t scored a goal in their last three matches in all competitions, with their last strike coming against Oxford United in late August.
This will be a major cause of concern for Blues supporters, who know that a destructive attack is crucial for success in the Championship.
As Goodman mentioned, the Second City side’s defence has been positive, with only six teams in the division conceding fewer goals than them.
However, that means little if the attack can’t reward the backline with output at the other end of the pitch.
Given the amount of business Birmingham conducted during the summer and the calibre of players they brought to St. Andrew’s, Davies will be under immense pressure to get his frontline firing.
