Lee Hendrie has spoken to FLW about the future of Huddersfield Town boss Lee Grant.
Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie believes Lee Grant has two games to save his job as Huddersfield Town manager after a poor start to their League One campaign.
The Terriers had originally made a brilliant start as the ex-Manchester United shot-stopper entered the dugout as a professional manager for the first time, with the Yorkshire outfit winning five of their first seven third-tier matches.
But their form has slumped in recent weeks, with Huddersfield picking up just one victory in their last seven games in all competitions and suffering back-to-back league defeats, which included a remarkable 2-1 defeat to Bolton Wanderers, as Grant’s side conceded two goals in stoppage time to throw away a one-goal advantage.
Scrutiny has arrived, particularly off the back of an exciting summer transfer window, as the Terriers brought in players like Alfie May and Lynden Gooch that provided optimism that promotion back to the Championship was a distinct possibility.
But now it’s seemingly slipping out of their grasp, with some connected with the club believing a change in coach is needed to salvage the term after recent disappointment.
With this in mind, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has spoken to FLW about what Huddersfield chairman Kevin Nagle should do about Grant’s future.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie believes Huddersfield Town can turn around their form and get back to competing towards the top end of the League One table, but feels boss Lee Grant may only have two more games before Kevin Nagle considers pulling the plug on the project.
Hendrie said: “With Lee Grant, there’s obviously high expectations from the players that they’ve brought into the building this season and pushing to have a go.
“It’s one win in seven in all competitions, which does make you think that there’s concern there, but it’s League One football, they’re still seven points off the top and in touching distance of the play-offs.
“The big worry is that they’ve lost five games this season and, with the squad that they have, they should be doing better. I’m sure Lee Grant knows that himself.
“It’s just whether they (the board) choose to push the emergency button so early on, but I think games are going to move him more and more closer to leaving the club, particularly over the next two.
"You think there has to be a change that can guide them a little bit further on and get them some more consistency.”
Few connected with Huddersfield Town could have imagined the slump they would go into after such an excellent start, and Lee Grant’s future has been deservedly called into question.
The Terriers’ squad is good enough to be competing for promotion, but Grant clearly isn’t getting the best out of it, and he must consider a switch in tactics or personnel to spark some form of change.
This weekend’s upcoming trip to Wycombe Wanderers could be his last game in charge if another defeat follows, and it will be no easy feat to avoid as the Chairboys have only tasted one defeat in the league since Michael Duff has taken charge.
It could well be that Huddersfield need a more experienced figure at this level to drag the club back into the promotion mix, with Grant’s first-ever tenure in professional management looking set to go up in flames as it stands.
