Lee Hendrie has told FLW his verdict on potential interest in Henrik Pedersen
Lee Hendrie has claimed that Henrik Pedersen could start to attract some interest from bigger clubs if he can continue his positive work at Sheffield Wednesday.
The Owls are enduring a number of off-field issues this season, with owner Dejphon Chansiri struggling to maintain the Yorkshire outfit’s finances.
The Championship side are at risk of going into administration, with significant financial issues including an unpaid tax bill to HMRC believed to be worth £1 million.
Players have also gone unpaid on time in five of the last seven months, which has caused some first team stars to terminate their contracts, such as Josh Windass and Michael Smith.
This has left Sheffield Wednesday with a very small and inexperienced squad compared to their rivals in the second division.
Hendrie has praised the Sheffield Wednesday squad, claiming they are able to perform more freely knowing there is very little pressure on them due to the situation at Hillsborough.
He believes Pedersen still deserves credit for the work he’s done, and has warned that bigger clubs could start looking at him in the future if he can continue to impress with this squad.
“I think you look, at times, and you do feel that at this moment in time he is on a bit of a hiding to nothing with the situation is at the club,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.
“Yes, the potential is there, he’s shown character.
“He’s sort of got a team together, but sometimes I think that comes within the squad also and that’s where I feel sometimes, when the pressure’s not entirely on you, you do find that you get results.
“You do find that you get a little bit more out of your squad because you’re not adding any pressure on.
“That’s the thing, having seen him under a massive amount of pressure, and that’s just because of the situation.
“And yes, he’s done well in that you’ve got to give him credit where credit’s due and if he continues to do so the big clubs will certainly have a look at him, there’s no doubt about that for sure because of what he’s done, how much he’s credited himself in this job at the moment.”
Sheffield Wednesday’s financial position has made this a very precarious campaign so far, with the team at serious risk of relegation to League One.
The club have been charged with breaches of the EFL’s rules, which could lead to points deductions, which would all but seal their fate.
Going into administration would also trigger an automatic points deduction, while also putting the future of the Owls at risk unless a buyer can be found.
A number of names have been linked with a possible takeover, but it’s proven difficult to strike a deal with Chansiri, who has reportedly set a £100 million asking price for his stake in Sheffield Wednesday.
Pedersen has never worked as a manager at a level anywhere close to the Championship before, but has stepped up from the coaching staff in a dire time for the club.
He deserves a lot of credit for what he’s been able to achieve with this squad of players, picking up some positive results against the likes of Wrexham, Birmingham City, QPR and Portsmouth.
That they’ve been performing better than their local rivals Sheffield United will give supporters some solace.
It’s provided fans with some silver lining in an otherwise difficult period for the team, which will be appreciated in time to come.
