Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman spoke exclusively to FLW about Charlton Athletic and QPR's interest in Peterborough United star Malik Mothersille

Sky Sports pundit and EFL expert Don Goodman has backed either Charlton Athletic or QPR to complete the signing of Peterborough United's Malik Mothersille this summer.

As revealed exclusively by Football League World last week, both Charlton and QPR are interested in striking a deal for Mothersille, who enjoyed a productive 2024/25 League One campaign at Peterborough.

The Chelsea academy product was an ever-present for Darren Ferguson's side as they finished 18th in the third-tier and he posted an impressive return of 16 goals and 10 assists from 57 appearances across all competitions, with 12 of his strikes arriving in league action.

21-year-old Mothersille has just twelve months to run on his current contract, however, and Peterborough will be conscious of the risk of potentially losing him for very little this time next year.

While clubs are entitled to fairly-healthy compensation figures when a player aged 24 or under joins another domestic side at the expiration of his contract, compensation is minimal when an agreement is struck with a foreign team and Posh were left frustrated when Ricky-Jade Jones rejected a number of Championship clubs to sign with Bundesliga outfit St Pauli, whereas a similar situation could also play out with coveted winger Kwame Poku.

Peterborough, then, may find themselves under pressure to sanction a sale while a fee for Mothersille can be negotiated on their terms, should any potential attempt to tie the versatile attacker down to fresh terms prove fruitless.

Don Goodman backs Charlton Athletic or QPR to sign Peterborough's Malik Mothersille

Speaking exclusively to FLW, Goodman explained how he believes Mothersille enjoyed a "brilliant season" amid Peterborough's struggles and that could earn him a move to the Championship.

In the pundit's view, Mothersille represents the type of signing which would fit the bill for clubs like Charlton and QPR, who lack the financial muscle of some of their second-tier peers and instead have to recruit lower-league talent at a lower cost.

"It's very rare that you can say with any real certainty that a player from one league can make the step-up to the league above. You only ever find out as and when that happens.

"Some players can, some players can't.

"But there's no doubt Malik Mothersille had a brilliant, brilliant season in what was a struggle for Peterborough United - unusually for them. They continued their trend of being a goalscoring team that scores loads but lets in loads at the other end.

"Mothersille's 12 goals and nine assists (in the league) highlights what a brilliant season he had in a team that struggled. He's still only 21 years old, so there's lots of development to come from him.

"So yeah, if you are a QPR or a Charlton, I think you probably would be signing a player that you can definitely utilise.

Charlton Athletic will know all about Peterborough's Malik Mothersille amid QPR competition

Charlton in particular will be familiar with Mothersille, having gained promotion via the League One play-offs under Nathan Jones last season after finishing in fourth.

Mothersille caught the eye on many occasions for Posh but saved one of his most notable performances for their shock 3-0 victory over Charlton back in March, in which he assisted teammate Abraham Odoh before getting on the scoresheet in the second-half.

The Addicks have already seen up close exactly what he's capable of, and you would suspect that more than a few of the Charlton players who faced Mothersille that afternoon would much rather have him as a teammate next term than an opponent yet again, this time at QPR or any other Championship club.
