Boca confirmed on Wednesday that Exequiel Zeballos has suffered a hamstring tear, an injury expected to sideline him for around three weeks after he left training in Ezeiza with discomfort.
The forward underwent medical tests, which ruled out a simple contracture and confirmed the muscle problem.
Zeballos has been ruled out of Sunday’s match against Vélez Sarsfield, scheduled for 22.15 at the José Amalfitani, in the fourth matchday of the Torneo Apertura.
The recovery timeline also points to him missing Platense on Sunday 15 February, and his involvement in the clásico with Racing appears highly unlikely. If the schedule holds, the winger could return in the Copa Argentina tie against Gimnasia de Chivilcoy, viewed as a possible comeback date.
The setback is significant for Claudio Úbeda, who had been leaning on Zeballos as a major attacking outlet at the start of the season. The staff are already weighing alternatives for a demanding run of fixtures.
The situation comes amid a delicate contract backdrop. In recent days CSKA Moscú showed interest with an offer of around 10 million dollars, which Boca rejected. The club remains firm that any sale would be only via the 20 million release clause, a stance strengthened by confirmation of the injury, with his deal up in December this year.
