Liverpool are reportedly expected to commence negotiations with Trey Nyoni over a new contract after rejecting a £30m bid from Nottingham Forest for the midfielder.

The 19-year-old is set to play a more prominent role for Andoni Iraola’s side this season after making a positive impression on the Reds’ new head coach, to the extent that he’s considered an internal replacement for Curtis Jones after the latter’s recent move to Inter Milan.

His game-time in the early weeks of the campaign has been limited – just 13 minutes off the bench against Oliver Glasner’s side last weekend – but the Merseyside club very much recognise his long-term value.

Liverpool set to open contract talks with Nyoni

On Monday night, Gregg Evans posted on X that Liverpool have no intention of selling Nyoni and are ‘expected to open talks over a new contract’ for the teenager.

In a corresponding article for The Athletic, he and James Pearce reported that the Reds rejected an offer from Nottingham Forest comprising £25m up front plus a further £5m in add-ons, with Anfield chiefs not prepared to sanction his exit ahead of tonight’s deadline.

Having signed a new long-term contract last summer, talks over a potential extension are expected to follow given the progress he’s made over the past year.

Liverpool recognise Nyoni’s worth to the squad

Having already sold Jones to Inter and with no discernible signs of a midfielder coming in on deadline day, Liverpool would’ve been very foolish to allow Nyoni to depart for the City Ground, or indeed anywhere.

He seems unlikely to be a regular starter this season, but with the Reds involved in four competitions once again, his value as a squad player will be substantial, especially if some of his positional peers are ruled out through injury.

His current deal at Anfield runs to 2030 and sees him earn £25,000 per week (Capology), so a further extension on top of that – and the probability of a significant wage increase to better reflect his increasing importance to the club – would represent a substantial show of faith from LFC.

In addition to Jones leaving for Inter, Liverpool have also sanctioned a loan move to Valencia for Harvey Elliott, so their commitment to keeping hold of Nyoni also testifies to how highly he’s valued.

Hopefully we’ll see the youngster establish himself as a fixed first-team presence for the Reds this season and ultimately vindicate the club’s contentious decision not to sign a midfielder from elsewhere.
