Jordan Thompson appeared to kick a water bottle at a Norwich City supporter during his side's 2-0 defeat on Saturday afternoon.

Preston North End are in freefall right now after they were beaten 2-0 by Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday afternoon, with the result seeing the Lilywhites drop to 17th in the Championship table - just 10 points above the bottom three.

While they do have a healthy cushion to the relegation places right now, this season has been one of two halves for Paul Heckingbottom and his players, with their play-off ambitions now over after a run of just five wins in 24 games. It's a run that stretches back to November, and they must have some fears about the form of those fighting for survival.

The Canaries were well worth their victory, with Ali Ahmed and Kenny McLean scoring first-half goals to hand their side all three points and keep them on the path towards the top six after a dreadful opening few weeks to the season under Liam Manning.

However, things could be about to go from bad to worse for Preston if the EFL and FA decide to sanction one of their players for an action that he took after he was substituted, and a ban may follow if they find him guilty of any potential charges.

Dermot Gallagher backs Preston North End's Jordan Thompson to face retrospective repercussions after bottle incident

Jordan Thompson was substituted in the 65th minute against Norwich on Saturday after a really difficult visit to Norfolk for the 29-year-old, and he was replaced by Pol Valentin. However, when he came off the pitch, he kicked a water bottle, and it appeared to hit a Canaries supporter in the crowd.

While it was missed by the match officials on the day, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has called on the EFL to reprimand the Preston midfielder. He said (via: Sky Sports Football): "Why would you do this? Whether he'll be reprimanded today, I don't know.

"But you look at that, the referee hasn't seen it because a substitution is being made, and the assistant's got his back to it. So he's lucky he didn't get seen, because it'd be a red card on the day, without doubt. But, seeing that, it's just so dangerous. You just see it hit somebody. It was somebody having a drink, they were not aware, it's a moment of madness."

Ex-Cardiff City man Jay Bothroyd agreed. He said: "I think he has to be reprimanded there, to be honest, because that is really dangerous. If that hits anyone in the face it's going to really hurt, but imagine if that hit a kid. I think that's really poor from the player and I think he should be reprimanded."

What sanctions Preston North End's Jordan Thompson could face after water bottle kick

The EFL and FA have the opportunity to review the footage of the incident involving Thompson now, and he will be waiting anxiously for a decision to be made in the coming days.

Given the fact that the ex-Stoke City player was not sent off during the game, he may be given a ban retrospectively, while he may also be handed a fine.

In December 2024, Jhon Duran was fined £15,000 by the FA after he kicked out at a water bottle after he was sent off for Aston Villa against Newcastle United. The Colombian had to be held back by a member of the coaching team, and he was found guilty of improper conduct.

Meanwhile, Unai Emery was charged £8,000 for kicking a water bottle that hit a Brighton supporter while in charge of Arsenal in 2018. Thompson seems likely to be given a fine, and there is the potential that he may be handed a ban.
