It has now been explained as to why Chelsea decided to make a random new hire that was announced last week, and it wasn’t a new player.
Chelsea’s season has been awful since Christmas. Before that, it wasn’t too bad at all. But now they have just lost two games in a row against Brighton, things are looking very glum.
Chelsea’s defeat against Brighton on Friday night has been named as the ‘worst performance’ under Enzo Maresca so far, and they are not wrong with that analysis at all.
There has been plenty of debate over who is to blame for how bad Chelsea are right now, with fingers being pointed at not just Maresca, but at the sporting directors who built this squad, as well as directly at the club owners. And the stats have backed up that all three have to share the blame right now.

Chelsea have captured the signature of former Rugby pro Willie Isa in a move that puzzled many Blues fans.
The Athletic explain that a Chelsea source told them the club’s thinking is to give every resource possible to help each player, on and off the pitch. Isa’s experience of playing at the highest levels of rugby league, knowing what it takes to win and maintaining his physical condition during a gruelling season, is just part of the reason he was hired.
Wigan head coach Matt Peet also explained why Chelsea hired Isa from Wigan Warriors to act in a player-support role:
“I don’t expect the supporters to ever physically see the impact he has at Chelsea. But he is a cultural architect. He will make the environment better and all the individuals around the environment better.
“Ignore the different shape of the ball that he is associated with, Willie’s skill set is all about high-performing teams, leadership and dealing with people. Everyone at Wigan and in rugby league understands why Chelsea have made this move. It’s intelligent.”
