VAR denies Wolves win over Liverpool

The day’s final clash saw Liverpool and Wolves play out a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

The Reds were promising in the opening moments with Cody Gakpo making his debut; however, a howler from Alisson Becker initially put Wolves ahead.

The goalkeeper picked up the ball and attempted to distribute it, but an alert Gonçalo Guedes stripped him of it and then tapped home.

Then just before the break, Liverpool pulled level as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Darwin Núñez combined brilliantly.

Coming out into the second half, Liverpool looked to take things into their own hands and turned things around within seven minutes as Mohamed Salah found himself in the right place at the right time.

Yet the Reds then stepped off the gas, which allowed substitute Hwang Hee-chan to turn things 2-2 with about 20 minutes left.

Drama then ensued as the visitors appeared to take the lead late on, only for VAR to rule the goal offside in heartbreak for Wolves but relief for Liverpool and a replay will take place.

Windass at the double as Owls clip Magpies’ wings

Newcastle United were dumped out of the FA Cup at the hands of third tier Sheffield Wednesday.

The visitors dominated the first half but it was the hosts who went ahead early in the second, when Josh Windass swept in from the edge of the six-yard box.

And Windass then put the League One side 2-0 up when he raced through on goal and finished emphatically in the 66th minute.

The Magpies soon pulled one back, however, with Bruno Guimarães tapping in from close range after a save from goalkeeper Cameron Dawson.

Chris Wood then had a gilt-edged chance to equalise when he was played in by Joelinton in the 82nd minute, but the striker fired hopelessly over the bar.

Non-league Wrexham pull off FA Cup giant-killing

National League outfit Wrexham stunned Championship side Coventry City to pull off the shock of the round so far.

Sam Dalby gave Phil Parkinson’s men the lead after 12 minutes at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

And the hosts were soon shocked further, when Elliott Lee put the visitors 2-0 up six minutes later.

Ben Sheaf then pulled one back for the Sky Blues with a powerful finish in the 36th minute.

But Thomas O’Connor restored Wrexham’s two-goal cushion with a goal deep into first half stoppage time when Coventry were unable to clear a long throw-in.

Coventry’s situation then went from bad to worse when Jonathan Panzo was sent off for a handball in the penalty area. Paul Mullin stepped up and dispatched the resulting spot kick for 4-1.

The hosts weren’t going out without a fight, with substitute Viktor Gyökeres pulling a goal back to make it 4-2 in 69th minute.

And Kasey Palmer then pulled another one back for 10-man Coventry to set up a grandstand finish.

But Wrexham held on to seal a famous victory in the club’s history.

Benrahma comes back to haunt Bees and end Hammers winless run

West Ham’s seven-match winless run came to an end when they won away at Brentford on Saturday evening.

The deadlock was finally broken 11 minutes from time, when former Brentford player Saïd Benrahma scored what proved to be the winner with a super strike after a big tackle from Declan Rice.

It is the first time the Hammers have tasted victory in a competitive match since 3 November.

Struggling Forest shocked at the seaside

Scorers: Ekpiteta 17′, Poveda 64′, Hamilton 71′, J Yates 87′; R Yates 90+2′

Championship side Blackpool dumped Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest out in stunning fashion at Bloomfield Road.

Blackpool opened the scoring when Marvin Ekpiteta prodded home after Forest had been unable to clear their lines.

Ian Poveda then made it 2-0 to the Seasiders just after the hour mark with his first goal for the club since joining on loan from Leeds.

CJ Hamilton then made it 3-0 with a powerful strike into the bottom corner, before Forest’s humiliation was completed by a late Jerry Yates goal to make it 4-0.

His namesake Ryan Yates pulled one back for the beaten visitors in stoppage time.

Kompany’s Clarets outclass Cherries

Scorers: Christie 12′, Solanke 48′; Benson 6′, 57′ Zaroury 39′, 43′

Championship leaders Burnley booked their place in the fourth round with an impressive victory away at Bournemouth.

It took Vincent Kompany’s side just six minutes to go ahead at the Vitality Stadium, with Manuel Benson slotting home after Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi lost the ball on the edge of his own box.

But the hosts soon equalised, with Ryan Christie pouncing on an error from Josh Cullen at the other end it make it 1-1.

The Clarets re-established their lead five minutes before half-time, however, with Anass Zaroury’s goal being allowed to stand after a VAR check for offside.

And Zaroury then bagged his second of the game to make it 3-1 after some nice link up with Josh Brownhill.

Into the second half and Dominic Solanke got the Cherries back in it after his initial effort had been saved by goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

But Burnley soon re-established their two-goal advantage, with Benson scoring his second of the game to make it 4-2.

Non-league Chesterfield take Baggies to a replay

Scorers: Williams 7′, Dobra 36′, 41′; Thomas-Asante 2′, 90+3′ Grant 17′

West Bromwich Albion needed a late equaliser to avoid being on the receiving end of a huge FA Cup upset at the hands of non-league Chesterfield.

Brandon Thomas-Asante gave West Brom an early lead at Technique Stadium, but they were soon pegged back by an equaliser from Tyrone Williams.

Karlan Grant then put the visitors back in front, only for Armando Dobra to equalise again for Chesterfield.

And Dobra then got his second of the game to give the Spireites a 3-2 half-time lead.

But the Baggies’ blushes were spared when a 93rd-minute equaliser from Thomas-Asante denied Chesterfield a famous victory and took the tie to a replay.

Mac Allister on fire as Seagulls win at Boro

Scorers: Akpom 13′; Groß 8′, Lallana 29′, Mac Allister 58′, 80′, Undav 88′

Brighton and Hove Albion are into the fourth round after a comfortable victory over Middlesbrough.

The visitors took an early lead at the Riverside when Pascal Groß found the net after Solly March’s initial effort had been saved.

But their lead lasted just a few minutes, with Chuba Akpom heading home an equaliser for Boro.

The Seagulls went back in front in the 29th minute, however, with Adam Lallana chesting in from close range after Kaoru Mitoma’s effort.

And World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister made it 3-1 to the visitors in the second half with a delightful flicked finish.

Mac Allister also hit the post with a free-kick before he did find the net for a second time to make it 4-1.

And Roberto De Zerbi’s side weren’t done there, with Denis Undav chipping in with a fifth goal to complete the rout late on.

Kurzawa opens Cottagers’ account in win at Hull

Fulham are into the fourth round after overcoming a spirited Hull City side.

Layvin Kurzawa netted his first Cottagers goal to give them the lead at MKM Stadium when he finished after Harry Wilson’s initial effort had been saved by the goalkeeper.

The Tigers pressed for an equaliser in the second half but the visitors held firm, before Dan James wrapped up the victory in stoppage time.

Kane class sees Spurs through

Harry Kane continued his fine post-World Cup form as he netted the only goal in Tottenham’s win over Portsmouth.

Spurs named a strong starting XI as Pompey came to north London with Kane and Heung-min Son leading the line for Antonio Conte’s side.

But it was a customary sluggish start from the home side as they struggled for rhythm in the opening 15 minutes.

It was Fraser Forster who was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first half with the former England international making a smart stop from Colby Bishop.

Into the second half and Spurs should have been ahead almost immediately but Emerson Royal’s back post header hit the opposite post and rolled across the goal line.

Tottenham did eventually get their goal soon after though as Harry Kane showed his class once again with a wonderful curled finish.

Conte’s side really should have netted another one soon after but Oliver Skipp’s shot from close range flew wildly over the bar.

But it didn’t matter as they booked their place in the next round.

Jones bags first Saints win

Southampton booked their place in the fourth round as they came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1.

Nathan Jones’s nightmare start to life as Southampton boss got even worse as Odsonne Edouard netted for Crystal Palace inside 15 minutes.

It was a neat finish from the Frenchman who netted his third of the season so far.

Palace almost doubled their lead late in the first half but Jordan Ayew’s effort crashed back off the bar from close range.

The away side found an equaliser though as James Ward-Prowse swung a free kick into the box and watched as it crept into the far post.

After the break the visitors found some fluency and eventually went ahead on 68 minutes as Adam Armstrong capitalised on a mistake from Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita and tapped into an empty net.

Palace thought they had a penalty with 10 minutes remaining but Wilfried Zaha’s protestation, after tripping in the area, fell on deaf ears.

Iheanacho helps Leicester past Gills

Kelechi Iheanacho was the hero of the hour for Leicester as his goal saw them beat Gillingham 1-0.

This was the first meeting between these two sides for almost two decades as Brendan Rodgers named the likes of Jamie Vardy and Youri Tielemans in his XI.

It was a fairly uninspiring first half with neither side creating too much in the way of chances.

But the Premier League side got their act together after the break and took the lead on 57 minutes thanks to Iheanacho’s smart finish.

It was his 16th goal in the FA Cup and wound up being enough to see the Foxes through.
