Fabien Barthez begins coaching course as France goalkeeping coach works under tutor | OneFootball

Fabien Barthez has begun his qualification to work as France’s goalkeeping coach, a process that will take several months. According to L'Équipe, he will continue in the role while completing the course.

He is set to lead his first session at Clairefontaine on Monday or Tuesday, depending on the fitness of the three chosen keepers, with Mike Maignan playing for AC Milan on Sunday.

French sports law, article R212-4 of the Code du sport, allows paid coaching while in training, provided prerequisites are validated and a tutor appointed by the provider oversees the work. Barthez has entered that pathway.

He is taking the FFF’s BEF in an accelerated track for former internationals, with the opening module at Clairefontaine from seven to 10 September. He attended alongside Eliaquim Mangala, Johny Placide and Aïssatou Tounkara, but illness kept him out of the final day the federation planned to showcase on its channels.

Further sessions run monthly, with placements at a club, one of the 16 Pôles Espoirs or the national technical centre, except in March. Certification at Clairefontaine is scheduled for five to seven April, overseen by a Pôle Espoirs director who will act as his tutor.

The course will confer a UEFA A licence by equivalence, clearing him to sit on a bench and even coach abroad if he wishes. His season will be demanding, between three international camps, 15 days in September and October, one week in November and 10 days in March, plus mandatory in person blocks. He accepts that as the price to be part of the project with Zinédine Zidane and to meet FFF regulations. Zidane said on Friday they share the same view of what a goalkeeper should be.
