Fabio Borini has signed a new contract with Salford City. According to Sunderland Echo, the 34-year-old has extended his stay after joining in October. He has made 14 appearances, starring in an FA Cup shoot-out win over Lincoln City and a 4-0 victory against Leyton Orient, Salford’s biggest result in the competition.
Borini joined Sunderland in September 2013 on loan from Liverpool. He excelled in the League Cup, equalising late against Chelsea and assisting the extra-time winner. In January 2014 he scored a penalty in a 2-1 semi-final first leg against Manchester United, then opened the scoring at Wembley against Manchester City.
His league impact was decisive too, notably the winner at Chelsea that inflicted José Mourinho’s first home league defeat and helped keep Sunderland up.
After a return to Liverpool and rejecting a permanent move in 2014, he rejoined Sunderland in August 2015 on a four-year deal. Under Sam Allardyce he delivered crucial survival goals, including a stoppage-time equaliser against Crystal Palace and penalties in wins over Norwich City and Chelsea.
Injuries hindered the following campaign and Sunderland were relegated. He left in 2017 for AC Milan, initially on loan then permanently. Back with Salford, he also scored and assisted in December’s 4-3 comeback against Colchester United.
