Arrascaeta has fractured his left wrist while playing for Uruguay, will undergo surgery and is set to miss key Flamengo games in the run in. Former defender Fábio Luciano has lamented the blow for the number 10.

According to Coluna Do Fla, there is pessimism inside the club about any return inside six weeks, so a comeback would only be likely for a possible Libertadores final.

The injury occurred on Monday, 29, in Seoul during Uruguay’s friendly with South Korea. After falling and bracing with his left hand, he felt severe forearm pain and left the pitch immediately.

Flamengo initially reported a left side trauma and sent him for tests, later confirming a fractured left wrist. He will return to Brazil for re evaluation before the procedure.

Surgery is scheduled for Thursday, 01, led by medical chief Fernando Sassaki alongside orthopaedic specialist Roberto Feres.

Luciano said Arrascaeta is difficult to replace. He suggested Paquetá could feature as a second midfielder and Carrascal as the creator, but insisted Arrascaeta has a sparkle they lack. Despite not being at his best, he contributes to goals and build up, and will be badly missed.

The semi final against Estudiantes is set for 15 October in La Plata, with the return on 22 October at the Maracanã.
