Injury issues have so far restricted Silva to fleeting appearances for his new club, following a summer move from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Silva had made just four appearances for Dortmund before the trip to Copenhagen, featuring for 5-10 minutes late on for Robert Kovac’s side.

On Tuesday, the well-travelled forward was given a much larger portion of the match, entering the field on 63 minutes as his team led 2-1. Silva got his goal in the 87th minute to make the scoreline 4-1, converting from a narrow angle to secure the victory and maintain Dortmund’s impressive start of 7 points from three matches in the Champions League.

“My teammates, all the lads who have worked with me in the gym since my injury, have done a lot to help me,” Silva said after the match. “Now I feel 100% fit again. Many thanks to everyone who has worked with me. Thanks to the coach. I always try to use my energy and help my teammates to create chances. I’m very happy about this goal.”

Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl added: “Fábio Silva has been an energising influence in every game he’s come on in. He rewarded himself with his first goal. For a striker, that’s worth its weight in gold.”
