A huge clash awaits at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland remain the only team in the Premier League unbeaten at home this season but for Liverpool, they arrive on Wearside bruised after that dramatic 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.

With just one win in their last seven league games, the reigning champions have slipped to sixth. For the Reds, this is not just about three points but about stopping the rot before their hopes of finishing in the Champions League spots vanish.

Recent form

Sunderland:

Regis Le Bris has turned the Stadium of Light into the most daunting away trip in the country. Heading into this clash, the Black Cats are remarkably the only team in the Premier League still unbeaten at home this season (seven wins, five draws).

While their away form has been poor, their latest game a blunt 3-0 defeat at Arsenal last weekend, their home identity is totally different. They have turned over the likes of Burnley (3−0) and Crystal Palace (2−1) recently.

However, they are facing a massive test of their depth tonight as they are without influential captain Granit Xhaka, who remains sidelined with an ankle injury.

Liverpool

After storming to the title last season, the Reds have hit a brick wall in 2026. They have managed just one win in their last seven Premier League games following a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.

That run has seen them tumble to sixth place, currently five points adrift of the Champions League spots. But they have slight encouragement going into this game tonight after draws for Chelsea and Manchester United on Tuesday evening, though their away record does not make for good reading having only recorded two wins in their last 10 Premier League away trips.

Injuries and suspensions

Sunderland: Granit Xhaka (out),Bertrand Traore (out) and Jocelin Ta Bi (out)

Liverpool: Dominik Szoboszlai (suspended), Jeremie Frimpong (out), Conor Bradley (out), Joe Gomez (doubt) Alexander Isak (out) and Giovanni Leoni (out)

Predicted Xl

Sunderland (4-2-3-1): Roefs; Mukiele, Ballard, Alderete, Reinildo; Sadiki, Diarra; Hume, Le Fee, Talbi; Brobbey

Liverpool (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Jones, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike

What managers have said

Le Bris (Sunderland): “It is another good opportunity to win three points. We know the level of the opponent is high. It’s important for us to be brave and ambitious and use the energy from the crowd to generate and sustain momentum,”

“We know that we have built strong foundations, but it is always a reset. Bouncing back from the last game will be a tough challenge, but we will be ready.

Arne Slot (Liverpool): “It’s not only that they [Sunderland] have a good record at home, they have had a very good season. But the record at home, I was aware of that as well. And already played against City and Arsenal at home, so that tells you how good of a season they are having and how strong and good they are at home.

“I can fairly say we haven’t been lucky, that’s definitely true. Is it then unlucky or is this part of who we are? That is something we can only find out in the upcoming three to four months.”
