Fabio Vieira says talks about his move from Arsenal were intense

Fabio Vieira has spoken about the tense final stages of his transfer from Arsenal to Hamburg, admitting he was unsure whether the deal would be completed.

The Portuguese midfielder returned to Hamburg for around €10 million late in the summer transfer window after spending the previous campaign on loan at the Bundesliga club. He enjoyed his time in Germany and wanted to return, but Arsenal initially hoped to receive closer to €20 million for his signature.

Hamburg remained patient throughout the negotiations, knowing that Vieira preferred a return to the club and that no other serious offers had emerged. Their approach paid off as they secured him for around half of Arsenal’s initial valuation.

Vieira Discusses Transfer Nerves

Vieira was delighted to complete a permanent move back to Hamburg, where he feels appreciated and has the chance to rebuild his career. However, he admitted that the final days of the window were difficult as the two clubs attempted to reach an agreement.

Speaking via Sky Sports, Vieira said: “The last two or three days in particular were quite intense. I was a bit nervous because I didn’t know if everything would really work out. But in the end, everything went well. Now I’m here and very happy about it.”

The midfielder had little control over the negotiations, despite making it clear that Hamburg was his preferred destination. Arsenal were waiting to see whether another club would submit a stronger offer, while Hamburg were determined not to meet the Gunners’ original asking price.

Hamburger SV Secure Target

Hamburg predicted that Arsenal would eventually lower their demands if no rival bids arrived. The German club waited until the closing days of the window and completed the transfer for €10 million.

Vieira had a successful loan spell at Hamburg last season, becoming a popular figure among supporters and an important player in the team. His return gives him a fresh opportunity to establish himself and show the quality that persuaded Arsenal to sign him from Porto.
