Kostas Tsimikas is edging towards the exit door at Liverpool, with Roma now positioned as potential suitors following a late shift in transfer negotiations. The 29-year-old has slipped to third choice in Arne Slot’s defensive hierarchy and is eager to pursue regular football elsewhere.
Liverpool’s stance earlier in the window was clear: any departure would only be sanctioned via a permanent transfer. However, reports from Fabrizio Romano suggest that the club have softened their position, informing Roma that Tsimikas is now available on a straight loan. That subtle yet significant change opens the door for discussions that could reshape the player’s immediate future.
The Greek international has already been sidelined in high-profile fixtures this season. He was absent from the Community Shield squad against Crystal Palace, where Slot preferred newcomer Milos Kerkez alongside Andy Robertson. That omission was repeated in the Premier League opener against Bournemouth, leaving Tsimikas completely out of contention.
Slot’s trust in Kerkez, just 21, combined with Robertson’s enduring presence, has left little space for Tsimikas. His progression from reliable deputy to overlooked squad option has been swift and unambiguous. With no clear route back into the side, the full-back’s desire to move is understood to be strong.
Roma, for their part, have played a patient game. Their preference had been to secure Tsimikas on a deal including a buy option, wary of committing resources without a longer-term guarantee. Yet Liverpool’s revised stance — sanctioning a loan without obligation — provides a new dimension to the discussions.
Whether Roma act on this opportunity remains to be seen. Time is against them, but the Serie A club’s defensive requirements are well-documented, and Tsimikas represents an experienced option with European pedigree.
While Tsimikas dominates headlines, Liverpool continue to address other squad matters. James McConnell has already sealed a season-long loan to Ajax after committing to a five-year deal at Anfield. That move, valued at €1.5m (£1.2m), underlines the Dutch club’s belief in the 20-year-old midfielder.
Meanwhile, Stefan Bajcetic’s future is less certain. Girona have been linked with a move, though Liverpool are believed to prefer him building further experience with Las Palmas, where he enjoyed a loan spell last season.
These decisions, layered with Tsimikas’ evolving situation, illustrate Liverpool’s strategic approach in the closing stages of the transfer window: careful squad trimming, measured loan placements, and calculated exits.
