Well well well. After all the chaos and the absolute mayhem of the past month or two Rangers are finally edging towards a new manager and of all people it appears to be Russell Martin. Yes that Russell Martin. The one we have spent weeks talking down because fans have been absolutely dead against him and the one who to this day is still not a proven winner. But in typical Rangers fashion this is now happening.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the news and when he talks people listen. He is not often wrong and this bombshell report says Martin is very close to becoming the next Rangers boss. And that changes everything because this is no longer rumour or fan speculation. This is real. The board is about to hand the reins to a man many fans have been desperate to avoid.
As we recently reported Martin was one of the final three and this has gone from possibility to inevitability. Romano’s word carries a lot of weight and once he breaks something it tends to get done. The delay on this appointment has been excruciating but now we know the club has been quietly working behind the scenes to get Martin over the line.
Of course the fans were asked about this very appointment and the verdict was not great. A lot of opposition a lot of frustration and a fair few fans saying they would walk away. So there’s no sugar coating the fan reaction here. If this is confirmed and Martin takes charge he has got one hell of a job to win people over.
We highlighted previously that some of the support simply will not give this guy a chance. But whether we like it or not this is where we are. The new regime has picked him. This is not Michael Beale’s ghost or John Bennett’s last hurrah. This is the first real call of the new board and they have decided Martin is the one.
Whether he is or not remains to be seen. But now we buckle up because the Russell Martin era at Ibrox is close to becoming a reality.
