Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Southampton will attempt to extend Kyle Walker-Peters' contract. His current deal expires after this season.
Since arriving at Southampton from Tottenham Hotspur, Kyle Walker-Peters has been one of the Saints' best players. He even stuck with Southampton through the hardships of the Championship and for the even-harder-ships of the current Premier League campaign.
Therefore, there is a growing acceptance within the Southampton fanbase that this season is the last in which Walker-Peters plays at St Marys. At least it would appear this way, with Southampton being a dead-cert for relegation at this stage.
However, Southampton would like to do something about his contract expiry in news which will be welcomed by Southampton fans worldwide.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, it is the plan of Southampton to extend Kyle Walker-Peters contract. They will try one more attempt to secure a new deal for their star player. At this stage, it is very likely he will leave on a free deal.
In his own words, Romano said: "Southampton are set to try one more attempt to sign Kyle Walker Peters on a new deal. He’s is in last 6 months of the contract; if Saints cannot agree a deal or do not sell KWP before the end of January, it is very likely the player will leave for free."
Look, we can understand why Southampton are giving their all to extending Kyle Walker-Peters' deal. After all, he is the best player at the club and without him, it's hard to envision Southampton dealing well in the full-back department.
However, the current position we are in requires the club to remove sentimentality. Unless Juric and the owners are completely convinced we can avoid relegation this season, then it would be more beneficial to sell Kyle Walker-Peters in the January transfer window.
After all, this month is the last opportunity the Saints have to make some money on their prized asset. It might seem crazy but with Southampton walking the relegation plank, it would be better to build for the Championship with the money gained by selling KWP.
Still, I would love it if he stayed at Southampton. It just doesn't seem entirely likely at this stage. I hope that I'm proven wrong, for obvious reasons.
