Scenario: The second-placed team face the 13th-placed team. Mainz 05 celebrated their first win of the season last weekend, while Borussia Dortmund are unbeaten in 12 league matches across this season and last.

Home & away: Mainz lost their first two home games of the new season against Köln and Leipzig, both by a score of 1-0. Last season, the team from the Rhine-Hesse region had the seventh best home record, losing just three of their 17 home games. Borussia started with a 3-3 draw at FC St. Pauli, followed by a 2-0 win at 1. FC Heidenheim, and have been unbeaten away from home for six months (four wins, two draws) since losing 2-0 in Leipzig.

Head-to-head record: Mainz 05 have won only seven of the 38 Bundesliga encounters between the two sides to date (18%). Even against Bayern, the 05ers have won a higher proportion of games (21%). However, two of their seven wins against BVB have been in the last three encounters. FSV won their last two home games against Borussia – in the 17 home games before that, they had only managed three wins. The 05ers have never won against the Black & Yellows after going a goal down.

Statistics: As was the case last season, 1. FSV Mainz 05 secured their first win of the season on Matchday 4. After only one point and one goal in the first three rounds, they won 4-1 at FC Augsburg. Last season, Mainz climbed from 15th place to third place after the fourth matchday. At the end of the season, Henriksen’s team finished sixth. Borussia Dortmund are unbeaten in 12 Bundesliga games (ten wins, two draws). Only Kovac’s team have managed three clean sheets in 2025/26. Along with Bayern, the Black & Yellows have conceded the fewest goals (three). Against Union (3-0), Heidenheim (2-0) and Wolfsburg (1-0), Borussia allowed only 23 shots on goal.

Beim bisher höchsten schwarzgelben Auswärtssieg in Mainz (4:0) im Dezember 2019 traf Marco Reus zum 1:0.

Playing style: On the first three matchdays, Mainz 05 managed to score just one goal from 46 shots (including three shots that hit the woodwork), but in their recent victory at FC Augsburg, their conversion rate was their big plus point: FSV scored four goals from 12 attempts.

Last season: In front of 33,305 spectators in the sold-out Mewa Arena, BVB were down to ten men from the 26th minute after Emre Can was sent off and fell behind twice through goals from Lee (36) and Burkardt (45+3). In between, Serhou Guirassy had equalised to make it 1-1 from the penalty spot (40). Nebel’s goal in the 54th minute to make it 3-1 put the result beyond doubt. Mainz’s victory was well deserved. Borussia only had three shots on goal – their second-lowest tally in a match since 1992.

Biggest away win: The most convincing of BVB’s 11 wins in Mainz to date came on 14 December 2019 with a 4-0 victory. Borussia should have been leading by more than Marco Reus’s goal at half-time, but they made up for it in the second half: Jadon Sancho (66’) and Thorgan Hazard (69’) finished off two counter-attacks with goals two and three. Nico Schulz scored in the 84th minute to make it 4-0 and cap off a highly deserved win.
