Nick Woltemade missed an open goal for Germany against Serbia, and the Juventus striker has subsequently faced criticism from German fans.
Considering that he is yet to hit top form for Juventus since joining them on loan from Newcastle United, it was a surprise that he was called up to represent the national team during this international window.
Germany has several top talents in their ranks and has continued to select them in their squad. Jurgen Klopp named two squads for this international window and still did not call up Nicolò Tresoldi.
Tresoldi plays for Club Brugge and has committed to Germany, despite being born in Italy. German fans have questioned the decision not to call him up instead of Woltemade, as reported by Calciomercato.
The report says that after the Juventus striker missed the open goal, fans began calling for Tresoldi to be selected and openly questioned why Woltemade had been called up in the first place.
The reaction comes as Woltemade continues to search for his best form since joining Juventus. His limited impact so far has added to the scrutiny surrounding his place in the Germany squad.
Woltemade remains part of the national team setup, but the missed opportunity against Serbia has intensified questions from supporters about whether other options should have been given the opportunity instead.

Woltemade has scored one goal for Juventus, finding the net against NEC in the Europa League. However, the Bianconeri need more from the striker and will hope he can develop greater consistency in front of goal when he returns.
His performances for Juventus will remain important as he looks to establish himself at the club and continue earning opportunities with Germany.
For now, Woltemade will need to put the criticism behind him and focus on improving his form. Juventus will hope he can return from international duty ready to contribute more regularly and add to his goalscoring record.
