The future of Leon Goretzka at FC Bayern remains open after criticism of him grew recently. Now sporting director Christoph Freund has commented on the midfielder’s role and expressly praised the international.

„Leon has played a lot of games. We know what we have in him. He is also an important personality in our team. He has always helped the team and is important for the team. He has gained a lot of experience and titles, and he brings that to the table. He is an important part of our team when he is on the pitch,“ said Freund at the press conference ahead of the match against VfB Stuttgart.

Coach Vincent Kompany had previously indicated that the 30-year-old’s playing time would depend on his current form. In the cup win against Union Berlin, Goretzka once again had to make do with the bench, while Aleksandar Pavlović started on the six. Kompany explained before the game: „If someone plays more, it’s a question of current form. I always try to choose what’s best for the team.“

Goretzka was substituted in the second half following Pavlovic’s injury and came in for heavy criticism after his performance. With Pavlovic unlikely to be ready for the southern clash against Stuttgart, Goretzka should get the chance to put in a better performance this time around on Saturday afternoon.

With regard to Goretzka’s future at the record champions, according to information from the BILD podcast Bayern Insider, there are currently no talks about a possible contract extension. Goretzka’s contract ends in the summer, and internally a new working paper is said to no longer be up for discussion. Instead, those responsible are already exploring alternatives for the midfield center.

According to the podcast, the focus is on three talents who could grow into the role of the veteran: Zé Lucas (17, SC Recife), Nathan De Cat (17, RSC Anderlecht) and Kennet Eichhorn (16, Hertha BSC). They should become part of the planned change in the long term – without expensive immediate solutions. There are also firm plans for Tom Bischof at Säbener Straße.

Goretzka himself continues to fight for his minutes, but Kompany has repeatedly opted for Pavlović alongside Joshua Kimmich in the big games of recent weeks. While Goretzka struggles to find his role in Munich, interest from abroad is growing. Juventus Turin were mentioned early on as a possible buyer. According to Tuttomercatoweb, SSC Napoli are now also looking at signing the international.
