The Barça president spoke out this Wednesday. Joan Laporta addressed the Real Madrid situation.
Ever since FC Barcelona decided to rejoin the EFC (formerly ECA) and distance themselves from Real Madrid in the Super League project, relations between the two Spanish rivals have soured. Adding fuel to the fire was the Merengues' aggressive involvement in the Negreira case. On Wednesday morning, Joan Laporta gave an update on the situation and confirmed that while there is respect between the Blaugrana and Los Blancos, that's about as far as it goes.
"The meeting went well, with respect. We've never been married, so a divorce isn't possible. The relationship isn't good because of the 'Negreira case,' where irrelevant and inconclusive facts have been presented. The fact that the case is still ongoing should draw some attention. We don't like it and the situation is tense. We are eternal rivals and we live that rivalry with respect. I didn't want to discuss the match in Miami against Villarreal. From the start, we saw opposition from the AFE (the Spanish players' association, ed.) and other clubs. I don't think this affects the competition," he said on Catalunya Ràdio's airwaves.
