The contract of one of FC Bayern’s top prospects is being extended. She is set to go on loan to a Bundesliga club next season.
FC Bayern is planning for the long term with Marie Gmeineder. The 18-year-old has extended her contract—but will still gain playing experience elsewhere next season.
The young talent has signed with the Munich women’s team through 2028. Along with the contract extension, Bayern is loaning out the U19 national team player for the upcoming season—to league rival Werder Bremen, of all teams . The club made the announcement officially.
The loan is intended as a deliberate step in her development. Instead of competing for playing time in the first team’s strong roster, Gmeineder is expected to play regularly at a high level in Bremen. The defender had already made her competitive debut in the first team’s jersey last season.
At FC Bayern, they have high hopes for the 18-year-old—and are open about the reasoning behind her move to Bremen. “Marie has developed very well over the past two seasons,” said sporting director Francisco De Sá Fardilha. She has “played with courage and impressed us. That makes us very optimistic about her future with us.”

At Werder, Gmeineder is set to gain “further important experience at a high level.” The coach there was also a decisive factor in choosing the loan destination. “Under the guidance of head coach Fritzy Kromp—whose ability to work with top young talent we are very confident in—Marie can take the next step in her development,” said De Sá Fardilha.
For the Munich club, this two-step approach makes sense: first, securing a long-term commitment from the double champion to one of its greatest talents, then a year of guaranteed playing time with a league rival. After her stint at Werder, Gmeineder will return to Munich—with more experience under her belt.
