FC Ingolstadt have sacked head coach Sabrina Wittmann, the only female boss in Germany’s top three men’s tiers.

According to BuLi News, three defeats in the last four matches left Ingolstadt 13th in the 3. Liga, and the decision was communicated to Wittmann on Thursday.

Managing director for sport and communications Harald Gärtner said the club had assessed the team’s development and results this season, and believed a new direction was necessary to provide fresh impetus. He called it a difficult decision on a personal level.

Wittmann said she had wanted to continue the journey with a squad of exceptional characters, but accepted the club had chosen a different path and that the trust was no longer there.

She added that Ingolstadt was more than a club to her, a home where she grew as a footballer and made special memories, and she wished everyone there the very best for the future.
